Classic Game Room presents a CGRundertow review of Stormrise from Creative Assembly and SEGA for the PlayStation 3. In Stormrise, humans have developed a technology that allows them to manipulate the weather. But as you might expect from such a destructive species, something goes terribly wrong. This is the post-apocalyptic world in which Commander Aiden Geary finds himself, a planet where the surface is burning and the survivors are at war. Like its story, Stormrise’s gameplay is also built from some interesting ideas. Unlike some traditional RTS games, this one isn’t about protecting a point on the screen. Stormrise is more about multitasking, moving several small groups of soldiers from point to point in a sort of bullet-filled chess match. This video review features video gameplay footage of Stormrise for the PlayStation 3 and audio commentary from Classic Game Room’s Derek.

Classic Game Room presents a CGRundertow review of Red Faction: Armageddon from Volition and THQ for the PlayStation 3. Red Faction: Armageddon follows up 2009’s Guerilla as the fourth game in the Red Faction series. Is it easy? Absurdly so. Is it mindless? Uh, did you think shooting aliens in the face wouldn’t be? But we prefer to ask…is it fun? And again, did you think shooting aliens in the face wouldn’t be? You play Armageddon as Darius Mason, the grandson of the guy you played as in Guerilla. Long and boring story short, you’re shooting monsters on Mars. Armageddon takes you through the interior of the red planet, providing a tour of some seriously cool environments. It’s a game packed with eerie settings, places only made creepier by occasionally nifty art and the tactics of your martian enemies…creatures that surround you from the ground, the ceiling and seemingly every shadow that surrounds you. This video review features video gameplay footage of Red Faction: Armageddon for the PlayStation 3 and audio commentary from Classic Game Room’s Derek. Classic Game Room presents a CGRundertow video game review of Puzzle Dimension, a downloadable game from Doctor Entertainment on the PlayStation Network (PSN). Puzzle Dimension is like the arcade and NES classic Marble Madness mixed with the tile levels from Super Mario Galaxy. Each stage is an intricate collection of square tiles. The challenge in navigating these structures comes from not only from their designs, but from the tiles that comprise them. There are a variety of these tiles that force you to carefully plan your route. Throw in the shapes of the structures themselves, and Puzzle Dimension really forces you to think spatially and problem-solve. This CGRundertow video game review features video gameplay footage of Puzzle Dimension for the PlayStation 3 (PS3) and audio commentary from Classic Game Room’s Derek. Classic Game Room presents a CGRundertow review of Return Fire from Silent Software, Inc. and Midway Games for the PlayStation. Return Fire is also available for 3DO and PC. Return Fire is a top-down tank shooter, another step on an evolutionary line that goes back almost 40 years to games like Tank in the arcades and Combat for the Atari 2600. You control military vehicles from a bird’s eye view, firing weapons at angles at enemy vehicles and, in this case, playing what basically amounts to capture the flag. Or capture the escapees in your tank and run them over. You have four vehicles to choose from in Return Fire, each with its own strengths. This video review features video gameplay footage of Return Fire for the PlayStation and audio commentary from Classic Game Room’s Derek.

Classic Game Room presents a CGRundertow review of Nail’d from Techland and Deep Silver for the PlayStation 3. Nail’d is also available for the Xbox 360 and PC. Released in late 2010, Nail’d is an off-road racing game that’s all about maxing speeds and getting air. Nail’d is an arcade-style racer in the vein of games like Pure and Excitetruck, an over-the-top exercise in driving up mountains and jumping hot-air balloons. The game feels like a total arcade throwback, but depending on your tastes, that might not be a good thing. The premise is simple in Nail’d — wait for the word “go,” hit the gas. Driving a four-wheeler or a dirt bike, it’s a white-knuckle race to the finish against your extreme peers, but what sets Nail’d apart is its arcade gameplay. This video review features video gameplay footage of Nail’d for the PlayStation 3 and audio commentary from Classic Game Room’s Derek.

Classic Game Room presents a CGRundertow review of Brunswick Pro Bowling from FarSight Studios and Crave Entertainment for the PlayStation 3. Brunswick Pro Bowling is also available for the Nintendo Wii. You can play Brunswick Pro Bowling with either a PlayStation Move controller or the standard DualShock 3. Regardless of which you use, both utilize motion. You’re doing the same bowling motion you did in Wii Sports, only in that game, it actually works. We recorded the game using the DualShock, but things aren’t much better with the Move. In fact, if anything, they’re worse. Although Sony’s controller can detect subtle wrist movements, Brunswick Pro Bowling doesn’t seem to care. You have to execute seriously exaggerated motions to get the game to work, and even then, it pales in comparison to the accuracy of Wii Sports bowling. This video review features video gameplay footage of Brunswick Pro Bowling for the PlayStation 3 and audio commentary from Classic Game Room’s Derek.

Classic Game Room presents a CGR Undertow review of Dead Space 2 from Visceral Games and Electronic Arts for the PlayStation 3. Dead Space 2 is also available for the Xbox 360. Like the original, a captivating story fuels Dead Space 2. Isaac is haunted by terrifying visions of his dead girlfriend, a death for which he feels responsible. But are they really hallucinations? As the boundaries between the psychological and physical world blur, Dead Space 2 weaves an engaging fabric of tragedy, acceptance…and sheer terror. That’s what keeps you glued to Dead Space 2. What keeps you playing, however, is that gruesome Dead Space gameplay, a set of mechanics that have been honed to a gleam for this sequel. Speaking of the rotting flesh on the Ishimura, Dead Space is a surgical game, a word as fitting for what you’re doing as what you’re doing it to. This video review features video gameplay footage of Dead Space 2 for the PlayStation 3 and audio commentary from Classic Game Room’s Derek.

Classic Game Room presents a CGR Undertow review of Alien Breed 3: Descent from Team17 for the PlayStation 3. Alien Breed 3: Descent is also available for the Xbox 360 and PC. Team17 has gotten the Alien vibe down to a science. Alien Breed 3: Descent is very much in the classic spirit of the first two Alien movies. The cold, damp walkways suspended in the mist, the flickering of a light in a narrow maintenance tunnel — and, of course, the blood-thirsty aliens that are xenomorphs in just about everything except name. Second, for better or worse, the gameplay is as predictable as the style. This video review features video gameplay footage of Alien Breed 3: Descent for the PlayStation3 and audio commentary from Classic Game Room’s Derek.

Classic Game Room presents a CGR Undertow review of Back to the Future: The Game: Episode 1: It’s About Time from Telltale Games for the PlayStation 3. It’s About Time is the first episode in a five-part series collectively called Back to the Future: The Game, a point-and-click adventure that continues the Back to the Future saga where the third movie left off. It’s meticulously faithful to the Back to the Future movies, and it’s also a fantastic point-and-click adventure, making it one of the very best movie-based games we’ve ever played. This video review features video gameplay footage of Back to the Future: The Game: Episode 1: It’s About Time for the PlayStation 3 and audio commentary from Classic Game Room’s Derek.
